Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens

Welcome to Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens

I enjoyed a quick trip to this multi-level mansion turned art museum, that featured a variety of art was well as a beautiful garden area to enjoy. All photos from the day were taken by myself.

Viewing the Gallery
First, I looked at a collection of works by Melissa Beth Floyd : Now What. This collective was a blending of portraitures and caricature. This collection invoked a sense of humor in me while also being very relatable. I am a mother of four, it is no surprise that the two pieces that truly resonated with me were Suck it Up, Buttercup and The Good Life. With the use of colors, form, lines and shape the artist has created a humorous but also reflective pieces. Chaos not only exists in the subjects and scenarios they find themselves in but also in the brushstroke, which range from spontaneous to precise. The heavy influence of 50's-60's homelife advertisements with a modern input on life and motherhood was very refreshing. Using exaggerated proportions and features allow the viewer to laugh at the art but also sympathize with the emotions each piece show; whether that be tiredness, frustration, sadness of pain. This gallery was a joy to walk through and made me smile many times but also made me think, is that really what a mother goes through? (sometimes, yes), I wonder what she does to make her so tired?

The Good Life

After viewing this gallery I continues to explore the main level and enjoyed other pieces of art and sculptures places throughout. There was a gallery setup with works created by young artist from schools within the area. It was enjoyable to walk through the gallery of young artist and see what they created.

Upper Level
We recently discussed Impressionism in the art class I am taking at Delta. I was on a mission to find a piece that I could look at and identify in this style, I found Landscape with Roadway by Frederick Ramsdell created in 1895. Looking at this piece I was could see the short brushstroke visible in the piece as well as the use of colors to show light shining behind the tree. Capturing the moment the light shines through the tree the resulting shadows created by the landscape with the used of colors and space.

Basement
Going into the basement for the first time, no galleries were open but there were layout created of the original mansion that now makes up the museum.
