Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville I recently traveled to Florida, along the way I stopped in Jacksonville to enjoy the beach and the city. I came across this museum and decided to go inside for this weeks blog! This was a very cool. multi-level museum that featured contemporary artist with all different levels of experience. My first stop was on the 5th floor where the Artist-In-Residence exhibit is. The artist's name is Dustin Sims, he is a student at the University of North Florida (UNF).  The 5th Floor Nature Re:Wired Dustin Sims Sims found his true passion of creating art after 20 years of military service. His military career allowed for Sims to travel around the world, seeing many cultures and wonders of nature. Studio 23

Image
Studio 23 The Arts Center This was my first visit to Studio 23 in Bay City and I can definitely see myself going again. During my visit they were displaying local artist. The faculty and students that enjoy the classes offered at Studio 23 also had work on display. Going into this visit I was not sure what to expect, I knew what the gallery was going to consist of but was I going to enjoy the experience. I am not a huge critic of art, I feel like I  can look at something and appreciate it just because I know the time and thought that goes into these pieces and the courage it would take to submit your work for people to see and admire, and sometimes critique. I was so pleasantly surprised to see so many pieces for sale and so many great pieces. There was much to see and enjoy but there were two pieces that really stuck out to me and I am going to share those.  Silver and Yellow Roses      This piece is an oil painted created by an Artist named Jim Todd. Flint Institute of Art

Flint Institute of Art I was able to enjoy walking through FIA and all it has to offer. I walked through the entire institute but I focused most of my time at their features exhibit. They even setup a replica of a tattoo experience by making a mock tattoo studio within the exhibit. The Art of Tattoos Seeing the journey that the art of tattoos has been on was so interesting to see. They out on display the expectations of early tattoos.  In the photos above it is a representation of what early tattoos were like in the United States. The history of tattoos goes back thousands of years and all across the world. This exhibit focused on the interesting history in the US and focused on the recent and current artist in Michigan. Early tattoos were a great representation of line work and had a very limited color scale. The photo to the left is a flash board created by Percy Waters, who was first introduced to the art of tattooing when a circus came through his home town in Alabama. H...

Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum

Image
Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum This gallery located at SVSU has a indoor and outdoor exhibition. I focused most of my time in the indoor gallery that consisted of Fredericks works, a replica of his studio as well as a special exhibition that will be there until August. This was my first time seeing this museum and it did not disappoint.  Sculpture Gallery  The amount of complete sculptures was truly mind blowing to me. This gallery consisted of 200 bronze sculptures and plaster models by Marshal M. Fredericks. Looking at these sculptures all I could think was the amount of time and patience that went into creating them. Just look at the sculpture of Jesus, when I stood next to it I barely came to his mid shin. I stand at an impressive 5'3'', so you can only imagine how massive this felt in comparison. Needless to say, I felt even smaller than usual. Most of these statues have a very smooth texture but when getting closer to some of the plaster models you can se...

Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens

Image
Welcome to Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens I enjoyed a quick trip to this multi-level mansion turned art museum, that featured a variety of art was well as a beautiful garden area to enjoy. All photos from the day were taken by myself. Viewing the Gallery First, I looked at a collection of works by Melissa Beth Floyd : Now What. This collective was a blending of portraitures and caricature. This collection invoked a sense of humor in me while also being very relatable. I am a mother of four, it is no surprise that the two pieces that truly resonated with me were Suck it Up, Buttercup and The Good Life. With the use of colors, form, lines and shape the artist has created a humorous but also reflective pieces. Chaos not only exists in the subjects and scenarios they find themselves in but also in the brushstroke, which range from spontaneous to precise. The heavy influence of 50's-60's homelife advertisements with a modern input on life and motherhood was very refreshing. Using ...
